This bronze statue of the Buddha, acquired in Kathmandu in 1973, is a striking example of Nepalese Buddhist devotional art. Seated in bhūmisparśa mudrā (earth-touching gesture), the Buddha calls the earth to witness his enlightenment—a posture associated with Shakyamuni Buddha.
The figure features tight curls across the head with an ushnisha (cranial bump), symbolizing wisdom. The robe is draped over the left shoulder with incised patterns, showing a blend of elegance and symbolism typical of Nepalese workmanship. The pedestal base is richly ornamented with lotus petals and detailed dragon reliefs, representing protection and spiritual power.
Despite signs of age and oxidation, especially at the base, the statue maintains a deep patina and integrity, having been preserved in a vitrine for over 50 years. It serves not only as a devotional object but also as a collectible artifact reflecting Nepal’s artisanal bronze casting heritage.
